Seongsan Ilchulbong Guide: Entrance Fee, Hours, Sunrise Times and Free Trail in Jeju

Seogwipean Project 2026. 10. 11. 08:00

Hello from the Seogwipean Project team.
We run Hotel Seogwipean and Boraed Bakers in Bomok-dong, Seogwipo, and Seogwipean Bakery in Seongsan.
Seongsan Ilchulbong (성산일출봉) is a volcanic crater on the east coast of Jeju.
The adult entrance fee is 5,000 KRW, and in October the gate opens at 05:00 and closes at 19:00.

What is Seongsan Ilchulbong and where is it?

Seongsan Ilchulbong is a 180 meter tuff cone in Seongsan-eup, on the east side of Jeju.
It formed when a volcano erupted in shallow water and the ash hardened.
The crater at the top is about 600 meters across, and from the rim you can see Udo Island (우도), Seongsan village and the sea.
It became a Natural Monument in 2000 and joined the UNESCO World Natural Heritage list in 2007 as part of Jeju Volcanic Island and Lava Tubes.

Parking is free, according to the Jeju World Heritage Office.
Google Maps gives only limited directions in Korea, so use Naver Map or KakaoMap and paste the Korean address.

How much is the entrance fee?

The entrance fee is 5,000 KRW for adults and 2,500 KRW for youths and children.
Only the trail to the summit needs a ticket.

Visitor Age Individual Group of 10 or more
Adult 25 to 64 5,000 KRW 4,000 KRW
Youth and soldiers 13 to 24 2,500 KRW 2,000 KRW
Child 7 to 12 2,500 KRW 2,000 KRW

No reservation is listed, so you buy your ticket at the ticket office on the day.
The official fee table does not list children under 7 or adults aged 65 and over.
Please ask at the ticket office if that applies to you.

What are the opening hours by season?

Seongsan Ilchulbong opens at 05:00 in spring and fall, at 04:30 in summer and at 06:00 in winter.
Ticket sales end one hour before closing.

Months Opening hours Last ticket sale

The official notice adds that visiting hours can be set separately when needed.

When is Seongsan Ilchulbong closed?

It is closed on the first Monday of every month.
The next closing days are Monday 2 November 2026 and Monday 7 December 2026.

When the first Monday is a public holiday, the closing day moves to a later date.
Visit Jeju and Naver Place word that rule differently, so check ahead if your visit falls in such a week.

How long does it take to climb Seongsan Ilchulbong?

It takes 30 to 40 minutes on foot to reach the summit, according to Visit Jeju.
The paid trail climbs steadily, mostly on stairs.

Official sources do not give a round trip time.
We suggest setting aside about 1 hour 30 minutes for the way up, some time at the top and the way down.

Is there a free trail at Seongsan Ilchulbong?

Yes.
A free section leads toward the Umutgae coast (우뭇개해안), separate from the paid summit trail.
The slope is gentle, so it works as a short and easy walk.
From there you look up at the crater cliffs from the side and see Udo Island across the water.

Trail Fee Time What you see
Summit trail Paid 30 to 40 minutes to the top The crater and the view over Seongsan
Umutgae coast section Free Not listed The crater cliffs from the side and Udo Island

If you have knee trouble or little time, the free section alone is a fair choice.

What time is sunrise at Seongsan Ilchulbong?

In October the sun rises between 06:26 and 06:50, and in November between 06:51 and 07:17.
These are the 2026 times for Seongsan Ilchulbong published by the Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute.

Date Sunrise Date Sunrise
October 1 06:26 November 1 06:51
October 10 06:33 November 10 06:59
October 20 06:40 November 20 07:08
October 31 06:50 November 30 07:17

The gate opens at 05:00 through October and at 06:00 from November, so in both months you can enter before sunrise.
The climb takes 30 to 40 minutes, so arrive at the ticket office about 50 minutes before sunrise.

On 31 December the Seongsan Sunrise Festival takes place, and many people come to see the first sunrise of the new year.

What should I know before I go?

Leave food behind and bring a jacket.
Here are four things to check before you set out.

  • Food You cannot bring food into the site, according to Visit Jeju.
  • Wind The summit is windy, so you need an outer layer even in October.
  • Weather The trail closes on days of strong wind and rain.
  • Tickets Ticket sales stop at 18:00 in October and at 17:00 from November.

What can I combine with Seongsan Ilchulbong?

Seopjikoji (섭지코지), Gwangchigi Beach (광치기해변) and Udo Island are common pairings.
Gwangchigi Beach faces Seongsan Ilchulbong from across the water.
Ferries to Udo leave from Seongsanpo Port (성산포항), which is close to Seongsan Ilchulbong, and in October the last boat back from Udo is at 17:30.
